Flip The Page's COMICFLIPPER Issue 1
Never say I don't do nice things. I already know I don't. So instead I did this, the first attempt at a collected issue of COMICFLIPPER (no logo yet for the cover hush now), where all articles are collected in one place.
For now this idea is simply to highlight all the articles on the site each month, it will probably become a full blown downloadable document come issue 2.
SO HIT THE JUMP AND READ THE FIRST ISSUE OF COMICFLIPPER ALREADY YA BLORKS!
FLIP THE PAGE Text Reviews
I'm more than a little aware that the whole TEXT review part is unnecessary, it's not like I completed any of the promised video reviews this month. All the same these have been well received full-blown reviews and well worth checking out if there's anything from the past month you passed on and might feel like tracking down from your local comic retailer.
They come in two flavours this month: OLD STYLE, wherein all the content is endless text of me jabbering on and on and on and NEW STYLE, which is focused more on the titular nature of this blog, and full of nice pretty pictures to keep you entertained.
OLD STYLE:
JUSTICE LEAGUE CRY FOR JUSTICE #1/UNCANNY X-MEN #513
X-MEN LEGACY #226
NEW STYLE:
[SPOTLIGHT REVIEW/COVER STORY]
NEW MUTANTS #3
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #600 (part 1 / part 2)
The highlight is definitely the spotlight/cover story NEW MUTANTS #3, which astounded me beyond any expectations. Honestly if you aren't buying ZEB WELLS' brilliant new ongoing then you should hang your head in shame!
QUICK-FIRE REVIEWS
Of course with a taste for reading all the best and worst comics I can get my hands on comes a ridiculous amount of writing. To remedy this I created Quick-Fire Reviews, an attempt at just throwing my basic view out there and running away to do something else. The original version of this didn't exactly live up to the QUICK part of the name and so this too managed to be changed into a NEW STYLE! YAY FOR PROGRESS!
(note: the new style isn't much better and will be revamped again in the future)
OLD STYLE:
Week of 1st July (Cable, Iron Man & More)
NEW STYLE:
Week of 15th July Part 1 (Dark Avengers, Mr. Negative & More)
Week of 15th July Part 2 (Skrull Kill Krew, Mighty Avengers & More)
Week of 22nd July (Halo: Helljumper, Captain Britain and MI13 & More)
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say my highlight is Quick-Firing All New Savage She-Hulk on the Week of 22nd July. I know I beat dead horses but it really IS the best thing to come out of Dark Reign.
ARCHAIC SPIDER-MAN REVIEWS
Of course to round out the comic reviews we have our astoundingly unique feature, reviews of the UK Collector's Edition ASTONISHING SPIDER-MAN. Seriously we may be the only people who supply this service to the rest of our brilliant British brethren and I've been lucky to have the reviewer of said feature Tim supply some of the best reviews on the site (if not the actual best on the site).
Whilst Amazing Spider-Man in the US had reached its landmark 600th issue AstonSpid reached a similarly awesome 60th issue, with it and the prior 59th issue breaking into Civil War's Aftermath BACK IN BLACK. Read the material here and (if you're English) pick up the issues! If you're not English then read the reviews and gain some wonderful hindsight into some classic Spidey material!
ARCHAIC SPIDER-MAN REVIEWS: NUMBER 59
ARCHAIC SPIDER-MAN REVIEWS: NUMBER 60
The highlight here? Tim ripping into the FREAKIEST image of Rhino EVARRRR!
THE ONE THEY CALL UNUSUAL
In the build up to starting his own blog up again, Milan has jumped on board the good ship SS Flipthepage for some promotion and to provide articles beyond the scope of what either myself or Tim would do. In June we got a who's who of Green Lantern candidates (none of them turned out to be him weirdly) and in July here we got a quality review of that piece of tripe TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. Oh and a whole plug debacle that is now under some carpets.
The One They Call Unusual: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Review
THE WEBSITE PLUG (check him out)
Highlight? Getting to add my annoying editor notes to his Transformers review of course!
TOP TENS
Ah one of my original concepts, the top tens were to be a frequent feature that gets you up on my ever so unimportant opinions. Instead I managed 3/5 of them over two months and keep promising the top ten writers one will be out 'soon'. Well whilst that is STILL true, at least we can look back at the ones I HAVE done. In July I managed just one of these, the bonus TOP 5 (or Top Ten divided by two ahahaha *slap* ow!) about series that you should be reading but aren't.
Top Ten Divided By Two: Comics You Should Be Reading But Probably Aren't
Of course with only one article there is no highlight, so instead I'll just remind you all how shitty it is that Captain Britain and MI13 is cancelled.
SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON (or whatever the hell it's called now)
If there's one thing this month that every comic fan has paid attention to it's San Diego Comic-Con, where all sorts of announcements were made, with varying ramifications. Of course being a tiny insignificant site I chose to mainly focus on the small and insignificant news. Or something like that... OKAY OKAY MAINLY TOYS! SHUT UP! As such here's the related articles from that behemoth of an event I didn't go to:
COMIC-CON MARVEL LEGENDS EXTRRRRRRRRAVAGANZA
COMIC-CON MOMENT OF WHA?!: TOXIN
COMIC-CON MOMENT OF RAGE: THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS (red she-hulk)
COMIC-CON TOYS: OH LOOK A POLL
COMIC-CON TOYS: OH LOO- HOLY SHIT BIG GALACTUS
INTERLUDE: PLANET HULK
Too many highlights to mention here, but perhaps the greatest thing here is the chance to VOTE for what Marvel Legends should appear next. Hasbro make shitty toys compared to the old Toybiz ones but this is a step in the right direction!
THE NEVER-APPEARING VIDEO REVIEW
Okay okay, this is getting silly, I started work on the first video review of three for a site event called Merc with a Month, which has successfully taken till now to script. Recording keeps getting stalled by various things (usually my own lack of doing anything I'm sure) and as such the two later reviews are potentially cancelled. However, the New Mutants 98 review IS going to come out SOON. In a way of apology I supplied you all with a mediocre fragment of the review script to show I was doing... something... that wasn't funny. As such here it is again:
VIDEO REVIEW PREVIEW SCRIPT FRAGMENT
Ah, one day...
NEW FEATURE!
Q&A With Flip The Page: Rampant Fanboy?
Issue-Exclusive feature each month (is it really exclusive to the issue if there isn't an actual issue this time around?) is a simple Q&A with myself to let you all know a bit more about some basic things. Each time around I'll answer two questions that'll eventually be compiled into an 'about us page'. Though not to say it'll just be me answering these. I'll interrogate Tim at some point as well to make sure we get a good deal of information about us both out there so you can understand why we love what we do!
Q1. How Did You (Flip The Page) Get Into Comics?
A. Whilst I've been a great lover of the X-Men since I was young (I'm a massive fan of the old 90s cartoon) and bought my first comic back in the early 00s (Essential X-Men, compiling some of Grant Morrison's New X-Men) I only REALLY got into comics when one of my best friends Luke bought the oversized hardcover of MARVEL ZOMBIES. After reading that I started peeking into the world of Marvel, getting deeper and deeper in, reading Civil War, buying my first trade paperback (Cable & Deadpool vol. 2) and eventually buying more comics than anyone ever should. That's the whole story really, aside from mentioning nabbing my brother's Hellboy volume 1 a few years before even reading Marvel Zombies (plot hole?).
Q2. Will You EVER Shut Up About Rikki Barnes, Fred Van Lente or Lyra (The All New Savage She-Hulk)?
A. I MIGHT. One day. To be honest though all three are amazing to me. That isn't to say they aren't flawed. Rikki Barnes has suffered at the hands of Liefeld, Van Lente did that piece of SHIT Marvel Zombies 4 and Lyra.... Okay she might well be perfect but she did kiss Norman Osborn which is pretty off-putting. Every needs an obsession, mine are those three and MORE. Oh and don't think I'm actually attracted to any of these people. That's a joke. Two of them aren't real.
And that's it! For all material from this month that I have (or indeed haven't mentioned) in this post/issue check out the JULY 2009 ARCHIVE. Otherwise have a great day and I'll be back with some sort of update either later tonight or tomorrow! Also to those who spot a lack of images... Well I'm thinking about how to make that seamless for the next compiled issue.
